Braid Backed Bun

Braid Backed Bun

Ciao!

Today I have a super easy braid hairstyle for you guys to try. For those of you that struggle with any kind of fancy braid, this is the style for you! It’s just a basic braid that adds a little edge to your lazy day messy bun look.

I saw this look on Pinterest a while back, and I’ve been trying to recreate it for a little bit now. I tried all sorts of things like flipping my head upside down and dutch braiding to the point of light-headedness only to discover that it is the most basic braid there is.  **eye rolls at self**

I got the idea a couple days ago that maybe if I just made a regular braid and fluffed it up, I could pull it off.  So this challenge for me became a 5 minute awesome hairstyle that adds so much cool to an otherwise basic greasy-hair-day messy bun.

The first step is to section of your hair leaving such a bottom section to braid.  I just clipped up the top half on top of my head while braiding.

And here’s the ~mystical~ step I couldn’t figure out: a basic, three strand braid.  Try not to make it crazy tight at the base, because you flip it up afterwards and it’s easier if it’s a bit looser at the roots.  Otherwise the braid an be pretty tight because it’s easier to fluff up the pieces when the hair is braided tightly.

Now just flip up the braid and do what I like to call, the pancaking.  The cherry on top of any braid is pancaking: pulling out the strands to create a fuller, thicker look.  You can do this as much or as little as you want but keep in mind that if you have layers, they will start to poke out.  (Sometimes that makes a cute messy look too though!)

I pinned the top (or is it the bottom?) of the braid with two bobby pins and just whipped up a messy bun.  You could also do a chic sock bun for an more put together, clean look.  The bun covers the bobby pins and voila!

Do you guys like this look? I often opt for a messy bun so I think this is a cool twist on it that requires very minimal effort. 🙂

Alla prossima,

Amanda <3

Love this style! This look adds a fresh twist to the typical messy bun. Thanks for the tip. 💕

I just started doing something similar to this the other day because my hair is shorter at the back and longer at the front which means that when I put it up small pieces at the back work their way loose. Braiding them before putting my hair up keeps them all in place! 🙂

Oh yeah that’s a perfect reason to do this, hadn’t even thought of that! <3

This hairstyle is super cute and so much easier than how I ever tried it. I remember trying this look by hanging my head upside down and make a Dutch braid, but this is so much easier!

    • February 27, 2017 / 10:34 am

Yes! I tried dutch braiding many times and it’s just too difficult. I think this comes out cleaner anyways!

Thank you! 🙂 I’m sure it will, I didn’t do anything else fancy. It’s like a two step hairdo, so simple!

I usually just french braid it but this looks so similar and it’s so much easier! Thanks for the idea

    • February 27, 2017 / 10:36 am

Yes I think it comes out cleaner too. You don’t have to worry about gathering the pieces evenly while french/dutch braiding. 🙂
