5 Free Ways to Clearer Skin

5 Free Ways to Clearer Skin

Hi everyone,

It’s definitely easy to get tempted by tons of fancy and expensive skincare products in the seemingly never-ending quest for clear skin.  While I do have several products that I use everyday, I find that my skin has sees the most improvement when I change certain eating and lifestyle habits.

In today’s post, I’m talking about all the completely free ways you can work toward clearer skin starting now!

1. Rinse — don’t wash — your face in the morning

IMG_0053 (1).jpg

My headband motivates me.

This is one of the best changes I made to my skincare routine in the last year.  It’s so tempting to just use product after product and repeatedly wash your face in the hopes of clearing your skin, but it actually has the opposite effect.  During the night, your skin produces natural oils and constantly stripping them away (especially first thing in the morning when you don’t need to) can cause your skin to over-produce oils and lead to clogged pores.

My favorite thought on this topic comes from Diane Irons from The World’s Best-Kept Beauty Secrets. “Unless you’ve been up all night digging ditches (you poor dear!) your face is not dirty.”

2. Relax!

Less stress = a happier body.

img_0186

This maybe sounds like a tired piece of advice but it’s my most important, tried and true, skincare (and overall well-being) advice.  In the last year, I changed my perspective big time on everything — from the way I look at the world and others to my daily efforts to stay present.  And my skin has NEVER been better.  I have always always suffered from terrible breakouts, especially on my forehead and it was always embarrassing and I couldn’t treat it with anything.

Though I have made some game changing skincare discoveries in the last year (namely Clarisonic and Egyptian Magic), I have to attribute the majority of the improvement I’ve experienced to my newly established inner state of peace.  Less stress=a happier body.

3. Drink more water

Bellezza-corner-water.jpg

Water is our bestest friend.  I pretty much exclusively drink water and keep tabs on how much I drink throughout the day everyday.  The benefits of water cannot be overstated, and it is one of the easiest and least expensive tricks for better skin.

4. Get a good night’s sleep

IMG_2361.jpg

Love me some twinkle lights.

I’m somebody who needs a solid 8-10 hours of sleep to be a fully functioning participant of society.  It’s something that I build my day, schedule, and life around because it’s that important to me.  I go to bed early ( around 10:00 – 11:00 pm) and love every minute of it.

For others like me and those of you who need less nightly sleep, you may notice that when you’re behind on sleep or not sleeping well for whatever reason, your skin responds.  Our skin does so much repairing during the night that it’s really a crucial time to heal breakouts and irritations.

5. Don’t pick!

This was a hard freaking habit to break.  I know people are typically either super grossed out by this or super into it, but I was and am never someone who can leave a zit just chilling on my face.  This habit, paired with stress, became a picking/popping/irritating nightly frenzy and led to even more breakouts and some light scarring over time.

I have found that if I touch a blemish, it probably makes it more clogged the next day 90% of the time.  Not worth it for so many reasons.  Now I still can’t leave terrible, obvious things on my face, but I don’t go searching for them.  Because if you look, you will find things to pick! So resist the urge to search for them.

Little tip → If you do absolutely need to pick or pop something, do it at night on a clean face.  The amount of healing that occurs through the night tremendously helps.

Thank you for reading, as always. <3 What is your biggest skincare hack?

A presto,

Amanda xo

    You’ve got beautiful skin tone.

Drinking water is a saver! I’ve been drinking water (consistently) for 21 days and I can already see the difference!

Oh yeah, and just the easiest thing to do for so many benefits.

I’ve always simply rinsed my face in the morning instead of putting product after product on it, and I can definitely attest to the fact that it’s actually better for your skin! I had one period where I suddenly thought I needed to wash my face with a product in the morning, and my skin actually got worse… And drinking water is absolutely a major part of having healthy and clear skin, plus it’s also good for your overall wellbeing! Staying hydrated is so, so important. I think the one thing I still need to work on is being less stressed – but I’m slowly getting there. Lovely post, as always!

I completely agree. Stress is tough one, but if it’s on your mind to work in it everyday, you’re one step closer! 😊 Thank you Freya! ❤

This post has motivated me & taught me so much about how to treat my skin! I started drinking more water and I noticed that my skin has cleared up a lot. I think the “rinse don’t wash” tip is genius and I will definitely be trying that every morning. I also had to learn the hard way not to pick my acne because now I’m dealing with some major scarring. :/ It’ll get better I hope. Loved this post! <3

I’m so glad you got something out of it! 😊 I know I was a serial picker myself and it just wasn’t doing any good so I forced myself to quit. Skin is pretty resilient and can change dramatically over time. I’m sure some/all of the damage will reverse itself ❤

This is an amazing post. I also take the steam with different herbs. It really cleans my face and makes it so beautiful. I don’t even have to use a foundation.

    • January 21, 2017 / 10:31 am

That’s an AWESOME idea actually. Something I haven’t yet tried regularly, just once in a blue moon. You’ve inspired me to go do that now!!

      • January 21, 2017 / 10:35 am

Thank You so much for appreciating. Yes, you should totally give it a try, also add some herbs in the steam for a boost.

  6. January 21, 2017 / 10:33 am

I love this post, especially the first tip about rinsing your face! I find that a lot of acne products give me even worse breakouts, so I totally agree with your ideas!

Personally, I realized my cystic acne was linked to a perfume allergy. Going scent-free has helped clear up my skin. See a dermatoligist– they can help you figure out what’s wrong.

    • January 21, 2017 / 7:51 pm

That’s a great point. I should have included to be mindful of product ingredients but I’ve written another whole post about what fragrance and other chemicals can do. Definitely a factor for many. 😊

  9. January 21, 2017 / 2:48 pm

These are great tips!! I had never thought of just rinsing in the morning.

  10. January 21, 2017 / 8:52 pm

I think my biggest challenge is drinking enough water. Good reading 🙂

  11. January 21, 2017 / 8:53 pm

gush i just discovered you blog and I love you contents. I already subscribed to your blog and I hope you do the same to mine thanks 🙂

  12. January 22, 2017 / 5:54 pm

Great tips, I stopped using a Cleanser when I discovered it just stripped my skin bare and left my face feeling tight. I just use my African Black soap to have my bath and wash my face.

    • January 22, 2017 / 6:38 pm

Thank you! Yes so many cleansers leave that feeling. Always lots of trial and error to find things that work.

  13. January 22, 2017 / 8:30 pm

This is a really great write-up! Super informative–I’ve been trying to tell people that picking problem areas will only lead to more, if not worse facial skin problems, but no one seems to listen. Glad to see you bring it up!! More people need to know.

Also didn’t know about the not washing at night fact! I am keeping that in mind from now on (I too, use skincare for my face)! 🙂

    • January 22, 2017 / 9:15 pm

Thank you! 🙂 And remember that it’s to try not to wash in the morning rather than night!

      • January 22, 2017 / 10:07 pm

Ohhh! Right right! I will keep that in mind my bad haha!

I will have to try just rinsing in the morning rather than washing my face, I always feel the need to take those important oils off. Great ideas!

I’m glad your skin is clearing up! 😊 let me know how they work out for you!

  15. January 24, 2017 / 12:39 am

Loooove the tips. Especially the first one! I have this habit of washing my face with a cleanser every morning too. But I guess you’re right. My face has no reason to be dirty overnight. Haha lol. And yesss! I always put a bottle of water beside my desk to remind me that I should drink and drink lots of water!

It’s nice to read something where people have taken the simple things in life and emphasized how important they are. We can spend so much money on products and although they may work beautifully, our lifestyle can equally play such an important part in our skincare too.

Aw thank you so much, I understand what you mean. I really mean it that the de-stressing component of things has given me the best results. No money can buy that 🙂

  18. January 25, 2017 / 8:24 am

Such simple things to healthier skin but some are difficult to implement for me. Hopefully with your post my skin will clear up over time 😊😊

    • January 25, 2017 / 9:42 am

Yeah pick a couple to try and focus on and see where that gets you! 😊

  19. January 25, 2017 / 1:59 pm

Great post will implement some of those tips!

  20. January 25, 2017 / 4:48 pm

    You are gorgeous!!!

  21. January 26, 2017 / 10:54 am

I kinda noticed the rinse your face in the morning thing recently. Washing actually takes away the shine from the night and leaves the face dryer

  22. January 27, 2017 / 11:14 pm

This is amazing! So helpful. I’ve finally got my night time skin routine sorted and honestly even though the results aren’t life changing their defiantly noticeable! Reading this has made me want to do an updated skin routine! 🙂 xx beautiful as well

    • January 30, 2017 / 11:41 am

Aw thank you so much, that’s so sweet! It’s just a result of laziness, really ha! Can’t be bothered 98% of the time! 🙂

  24. January 30, 2017 / 7:13 am

I never thought to just use water in morning. I going give it a try, my skin has been getting so oily lately. 😊😊

    • January 30, 2017 / 11:44 am

Yeah! No harm in trying! I’ve found it’s helped me a lot, especially when I’m experiencing breakouts. Counter intuitive, but it worked for me! 🙂

      • January 31, 2017 / 3:28 pm

        Thanks for tip xx

  25. January 31, 2017 / 2:21 am

Water is so important when looking after your skin! I remember at one stage I was drinking so much water and my skin was glowing. When people asked what the secret was and I said ‘water’…I was told I was lying and didn’t want to share my secret. lol

Just rinse with water and pat dry?

    • January 31, 2017 / 3:33 pm

hahah so true! Yes I just rinse and dry in the mornings now. I really saw a lot of improvement from that. 🙂

  26. February 1, 2017 / 3:17 pm

I have never thought to not wash my face in the morning, but now you have said it it makes so much sense! Thanks for the tips!

  27. February 7, 2017 / 1:15 pm

Great advice! & exactly!!! washing your face in the morning is pointless 💋

  28. February 21, 2017 / 4:25 am

i couldn’t have writ this better myself, love this post.. these tips are 100% effective!

  29. March 15, 2017 / 2:07 pm

Don’t wash but just rinse your face in the morning? Wow, that’s interesting .. I’ll give it a try tomorrow. Otherwise it is the first thing I did as my skin got oily. Thanks for sharing such great tips.

    • March 15, 2017 / 10:21 pm

Yes, give it a try! It’s honestly changed the game for me! 🙂

      • March 16, 2017 / 12:57 am

Just did! Hmm, this might take a bit of getting used to as too used to using something or the other in the morning 🙂 …

      • March 16, 2017 / 10:13 pm

It might be weird at first like breaking any habit, but it will pay off! 🙂

      • March 17, 2017 / 3:51 pm

I can see a slight difference already! Can’t believe it was something so basic yet I was doing it wrong this whole time … Thanks heaps!

      • March 17, 2017 / 3:56 pm

OMG yay!! so happy to hear that! 🙂 I know, that’s why I always like to highlight and remind people about free beauty practices bc it’s not always a super expensive product that brings about positive change! xo

      • March 17, 2017 / 4:11 pm

I’ve been telling all my friends about this new trick and your wonderful blog as well of course … xx

      • March 17, 2017 / 5:22 pm

Aww thank you!! You made my day, thank you for coming back in and sharing how it worked for you! 🙂 <3

  30. May 16, 2017 / 4:03 pm

Great post! I agree with all your points, although I don’t follow them all (because I’m a hypocrite 😂). For example, I don’t sleep early, and it’s always been like that even when I was a student although I do actually have good quality sleep.

I really agree with your first point. I normally just use micellar water and toner in the morning to freshen up or literally just splash my face with cold running water.
